Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Frank (aka Dad, Daddy, Daddy Pat, Pop, Sonny) grew up in the Washington, D.C. area, spending most of his summers on the family peanut farm in Blakely, GA. During the Korean War, Frank joined the Air Force, where he was stationed in Iceland. After completing his service, he graduated from American University becoming the first in his family to earn a degree with a BS in Industrial Relations and gaining lifelong brothers from his fraternity, ATO. He founded Patterson & Associates (later becoming Patterson/Smith Associates or PSA) in 1961. Before selling the company to USI Holdings in 2005, the firm grew into one of the largest independently owned insurance brokerage and employee benefits firms in the D.C. metropolitan area. He was recognized and awarded for many of his contributions to the Independent Insurance Agents of America (IIAA), where he served as Chairman of IIAA’s Federal Affairs Committee and even represented his industry on Capitol Hill. During and after his impressive and admirable career, Frank served on several Boards and Committees, both within the insurance industry and those related to his long memberships with Ocean Reef Club and Key Largo Anglers Club.

Everyone that knew Frank, knew that he loved his friends and family above all, working hard his entire life to provide for and protect them. He even purchased the first family car before he could drive. Loyal, kind, compassionate, generous, fun, witty and always offering a sarcastic quip, middle finger or the most perfectly timed one-liners. He was extremely accident prone, and clumsy, which made him even more loveable to many, which also became the hilarity of his most memorable stories. When he wasn’t working hard or spending time with loved ones, he was cheering on the Washington Commanders (formerly Redskins) as an avid fan. The man was a legend and always will be in the eyes of those who loved him. We are all so thankful to have known and loved him, but even luckier to have had such an impactful and motivating role model in our lives. Frank is now at peace in Heaven and raising a glass of Whispering Angel rosé with his beloved wife, Nina.
