Jane Murray (Mooney) Freund

December 6, 1922 – April 5, 2017

Jane Murray (Mooney) Freund passed away April 5, 2017 at her home in Tavernier, Florida. She was 94 years old. The daughter of M. Eugenie (Jaede) Mooney and A. Hulse Mooney, born on the Mooney Dairy Farm in Flanders, NJ, Jane attended Roxbury High School and graduated from Cedar Crest College in 1944 with a BS Degree in Dietetics. She married Leonard E. Freund (1920 – 1986) in Columbia, SC in 1942. After WWII they returned to Succasunna, NJ to start an automotive business and raise their family. They retired to the Florida Keys and spent summers with family at their wilderness camp on Spednic Lake in Maine.

Jane led an active and rewarding life and held many leadership roles in several organizations serving her community. She was a Sunday school teacher, a host for Rotary International Experimenters, President of her college class, involved in Girl and Boy Scouting and 4H.  She was a proud member of Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the American Revolution along with many other hereditary and lineage organizations including Descendants of the Founders of New Jersey. Jane’s philanthropic endeavors included Roxbury Historical Society and Appalachian Trail Conservancy. She had a passion for quilting and collecting miniatures.

Jane traveled extensively here and abroad. As an avid naturalist, her remote camp in Maine was a favorite summer destination. Well into her late 80’s, Jane took several trips in her RV, driving to Alaska, across Canada and throughout the USA, visiting friends, family and discovering the hidden gems of America.

Jane was very active in genealogy and traced her family back to Charlemagne, 733 AD, connecting her family with their past.

Jane was most proud of her family and is survived by her three children, Bob Freund (wife Pam) of Flanders, NJ, Jon Freund (wife Diana) of Orlando, FL, Genie Dillon (husband Paul) of Exeter, ME, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Jane now joins her husband Leonard and two of her grandchildren who sadly predeceased her. We will miss her wisdom, advice and encouragement, adventurous spirit, sense of humor and unshakable love of family and devoted friends.

A Memorial and Celebration of Life Services will be held on Saturday May 6, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Ledgewood Baptist Church, Ledgewood, New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Ledgewood Baptist Church in Jane’s memory would be appreciated.
