Jean Morley Lovett
died at home surrounded by family on May 14, 2021 at the age of 96. Daughter of Harriet Robertson Morley and Ralph Chase Morley Jr., Jean grew up with her sister, Lucy Anne Morley Thompson, in Saginaw, MI, graduated from Colby Junior College in New London, NH, and married Richard Lovett of New Haven, CT in 1947. They settled in Walpole, MA and raised three children: Nancy Bray of Palm Gardens, FL, Richard Lovett of Holderness, NH, and Anne Lovett of Holderness, NH. She is survived by her children, their spouses, eight grandchildren: Matthew, Collin, and Jordan Bray; Alexandra, Chase, and Cameron Lovett-Woodsum; and Zachary and Esther Lovett; and one great-grandchild, Caleb Bray-Ong.
In her youth, Jean spent summers at Higgins Lake in Michigan. Sailing was her passion throughout her life. In her adult years in Walpole, MA she was an active member of the League of Women Voters and the United Church of Christ, and owned and operated a unique gift store, The Lobster Shop. The Lovett family divided summers between Higgins Lake in MI with the Morleys and Squam Lake in NH where extended Lovett relatives also summer.
In retirement, Jean and Dick Lovett moved to Holderness, NH. Dick passed away in 1992. Jean remained active in civic life by serving on the board of Spaulding Academy and Family Services and Pemi-Baker Community Health. She also loved gardening, birding, and family get-togethers.
In 2005 Jean married William C. Roney, Jr., whom she knew from childhood in Michigan. They had many happy years in Florida. He predeceased her in 2018.
Jean is remembered for her devotion to family and friends, a love of oysters on the half shell, an infectious smile and wave, a keen sense of humor, and a commitment to the well being of others. An activist, she marched against the proliferation of atomic weapons and for women’s rights.
Family and friends will gather for a celebration of Jean’s life on July 31, 2021. Burial will be in Holderness, NH. Donations may be made in Jean’s memory to the
Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, Holderness, NH
