Leon Heichelbech

December 5, 1935 — February 17, 2022

Key Largo

Leon was born in Akron, Ohio in 1935, and died at home, peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with cancer, on February 17, 2022, at the age of 86.   Lee married Miss Benita Sorce of Waco, Texas in 1957, and the couple moved to Miami in 1963 with their first two children to start their new life while Lee worked for the U. S. Federal Aviation Administration.  They later had their third child in Miami where they lived until his retirement in 1990, when he retired after 36 years of service as an Electronics Technician Supervisor.  They then moved to Key Largo to live full time and enjoy their early retirement while travelling around the U. S. in their RV during the summers.

Lee was an active member of St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church since 1974.  He served as Eucharistic Minister.  He was a member in the Men's Club, an usher, and the member of St. Vincent de Paul.  Lee was also an active member of the Key Largo Civic Club for over 30 years where he served as President for four years and served on the Board of Directors for over 20 years.  Lee also volunteered by preparing taxes for several years for the citizens of Key Largo for AARP.  Lee enjoyed fishing, free diving for lobster, shrimping and anything on the water with his children and friends.

Lee's predeceased are his son Frank Heichelbech, brother Harold, and sisters Audrey Clark and Vesta Rickert.

Lee is survived by his wife Nita, his son Duane (Valerie) Heichelbech and daughter Janet (Stephen) Jones.  Lee had five grandchildren (Eric Heichelbech, Kristi Stewart Casey Jones, Amber Jones, and Jamie Heichelbech) and three great-grandchildren (Ember Stiles, Marcus Stiles, and Carter Heichelbech).

Funeral services will be held at St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church. Time and Date to be announced.
