Rod Schaeffer

April 8, 1945 — December 29, 2009

Rodney Howard Schaeffer September 8, 1945 ~ December 29, 2009

Rodney "Rod" Howard Schaeffer died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Mariners Hospital in Key Largo, Florida at age 65 after a battle with pneumonia. Even though he put of a good fight, the Pneumonia won.

Rodney "Rod" was born September 8, 1944 in Trenton, Michigan to John Millard and Della Mae Schaeffer. Rod's mother passed away when he was a young boy. John Schaeffer later married Francis Scheaffer, who would become Rod's favorite side-kick until her death last year.
He attended school at Trenton High School in Trenton, Michigan. Having lived much of his young life in Michigan, this is where his many stories originated. He often laughed when telling stories of old. About sneaking out of his dad's house to go drinking. He said his dad used to stack a lot of cans in the window so he would know when he finally came home.

Rod had worked for the railroad in the early 1970's, but hurt his back and found himself being an electrician. He took great pride in being able to work on "hot" wires and anyone who couldn't didn't have any business working with electricity.

Rod married Wendy (Dori) Bartos in Michigan in 1966; they had a daughter, Michelle in 1967 and later divorced in 1972. Rod met and married the love-of-his-life, Sandra (Sandy) in Michigan in the late 70's and they moved to Florida where Rod could be warm. They lived in the Ft. Lauderdale area and enjoyed many outings with friends and lived a great life together.

Rod also enjoyed helping out his friends by working on their cars, trucks, boats or any thing they may have needed help getting to work. He was known to be able to fix things that no one else could fix. He always laughed about that. He also loved the fact that his friends knew that they could go to him with problems. He enjoyed spending his time talking about "the old days," motorcycles, cars, and his many travels. He loved painting, drawing, visiting with friends and giving a helping hand wherever he was needed. Rod's unique personality, along with his daily phone calls, will be dearly missed.

Rod is survived by his daughter, Michelle Scheaffer, of Brush Prairie, Washington, and siblings Catherine (Cathy) Nestman of Michigan, Judith May (JuJu) Demick of Michigan and Fred (Butch) Scheaffer of Michigan, along with neices and nephews. He is also survived by extended family, friends Reggie, Norm, Ralph, Chuck, Mary, Luke, Don, Duncan, Tony, Mike, Ron, Cyndi and numerous others.

He was predeceased by his mother, Della Mae Scheaffer, kis wife, Sandy Schaeffer, father John Scheaffer, nephew, Ron Nestman, best friend, Beth, and his Step-Mother Francis Scheaffer. Also, his beloved cat Smokey.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturda, January 16, 2010, at 10:00 am At Dania Beach, Florida. Byers Funeral Home, Key Largo, FL handled the cremation.
